PLACES: CHATHAM COUNTY AND ITS MUNICIPALITIES
“A place belongs forever to whoever claims it hardest, remembers it most obsessively, wrenches it from itself, shapes it, renders it, and loves it so radically that he remakes it in his own image.” -- Joan Didion
There are eight municipalities within Chatham County, Georgia: Bloomingdale, Garden City, Pooler, Port Wentworth, Savannah, Thunderbolt , Tybee Island and Vernonburg. The City of Savannah is the county seat. Unincorporated areas such as Georgetown, Isle of Hope, Montgomery, Skidaway Island, Whitemarsh Island and Wilmington Island are a part of Chatham County's geography.
Each municipality and county government manages its water usage, quality, compliance, and abuse throughout Chatham County. Water Resource Management, through the Chatham County-Savannah Metropolitan Planning Commission, serves as a central resource working in concert with participating municipal leaders and county officials.
With its treasured and cultivated beauty, one National Geographic travel writer called the area “dreamy Savannah.”
