Community Gardens

Community and school gardens have many benefits that we can all enjoy! Community gardens can help to:

  • Improve the quality of life for people in the garden
  • Provides a catalyst for neighborhood and community development
  • Stimulates Social Interaction
  • Encourages Self-Reliance
  • Beautifies Neighborhoods
  • Produces Nutritious Food
  • Reduces Family Food Budgets
  • Conserves Resources
  • Creates opportunity for recreation, exercise, therapy, and education
  • Help with crime reduction in certain areas
  • Preserves Green Space
  • Reduces city heat from streets and parking lots
  • Provides opportunities for intergenerational and cross-cultural connections

Luckily for us, the city of Savannah has a great new program taking root throughout area neighborhoods!

The program is allowing more than 1,250 city-owned parcels, stretching from Woodville and Hudson Hill to Paradise Park and Wilshire Estates, to be made available to residents and neighborhood associations to start community gardens.

Each garden will need a designated “farmer of record,” and users will have to agree to grow organic only. Most of the lots have water available, but in some cases the city will extend water lines to the plots. All of the gardeners will have to pay for the water used on-site. In addition, fees can only be collected to cover basic expenses, and food grown on the plots cannot be sold for profit.

To apply for a garden spot or to learn more about the program, contact Carol Moon with the city of Savannah’s Real Property Services Department at 912-651-6524.
